Surprise, surprise: Ford Motor Co's latest study shows that its voice-activated Sync system significantly reduces the level of driving distractions versus using handheld electronic devices. The recently revamped multimedia system allows for the connection of Bluetooth devices as well as the control of personal music players.

In the study, Ford researchers utilized 25 individuals to test their ability to dial a 10-digit phone number, place a call from a phonebook, answer calls, send and receive text messages and select songs, all the while driving. Their results were no big surprise. According to the automaker, it takes roughly 25 sec to select a song from a music player compared to doing the same action with the use of Sync. It supposedly only takes 2 sec with the system in place. Much the same results were found when text messaging -- 11 sec without Sync, 2 sec with it.

Thirty percent of those taking part in the study also dangerously veered into adjacent lanes while fumbling around with phones, music players, GPS units, etc. The percentage drops to nil with Sync on board.

Ford is now offering the system with a "911 Assist" function that alerts and directs emergency crews of a possible collision. It also gives up to date traffic reports and directions.

Currently three years of Sync service are included with the sale of a new Ford Motor Co. vehicle.
